Waves for Wellbeing

Catching waves on bodyboards for fun and wellbeing the Groundswell Scotland way!

Catching Waves

After a very successful pilot in 2025, our Waves for Wellbeing sessions are now being offered regularly to help you focus on catching waves in any way you can. Our intention is to create a safe space for you to play, be in a community of supportive women, and build your confidence in the water. It may be that you decide bodyboarding is the best way for you to catch waves or you might decide to try a surfboard at one of our Surf Bliss sessions.

What to Expect

All of our sessions begin with groundings, mindful breathing, and a check in with the body and mind. Our aim is to help you make a connection between the two and find your stoke (surfing term for extreme happiness!) in the water, in a safe and supported way.

Before we get in the water, we will ask you to set an intention, tell us what you’d like to find in the sea or, what you’d like to leave on the beach. This question can help create the space you need to pause, breath deeply, and reset.

In these sessions we’ll use body boards to learn how to select your wave and ride it in while really connecting with the playfulness of surfing. On a body board you hold on to the board, leap into the white water of the breaking wave and whizz into the beach. Your legs are able to provide an extra boost as they are free to kick and you can use your upper body to steer the board. This takes away the pressure of surfing on a surfboard as you won’t be trying to stand up.

We won’t go any deeper than waist-chest height so you will feel safe (you will always be able to put your feet on the sand). It’s a really accessible way to have fun and play; get ready to find your inner child!

The session will finish with waves of wisdom, a chance for you to reflect on how you were feeling before, during, and after your time in the sea. We will talk about our reflections as a group and you can share if you feel comfortable.
